WHAT ARE IMPLANT SECURED DENTURES?

If you’re having a lot of trouble with an ill-fitting denture, you might benefit from an implant-secured denture. These dentures, which are sometimes referred to as overdentures, clip onto implants that are placed into the jawbone. These implants fuse naturally with the jawbone and can last for decades. A smaller denture is made specifically for you to fit over the dentures, preventing the need for adhesives, creams and gels.

WHY ARE IMPLANT SECURED DENTURES NEEDED?

Implant-secured dentures are a great way to prevent your appliance from slipping or falling out. There is probably nothing more embarrassing to a denture patient than for their prosthesis to slip while they’re talking or eating. For other patients, they may find that their denture simply doesn’t sit right and is uncomfortable throughout the day. In either case, an overdenture can be made to clip onto implants that are strategically placed around an entire arch within the mouth.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR IMPLANT SECURED DENTURES?

Sample Title

In order for the implants to heal correctly, you need enough solid and healthy bone in the area they’re going to be placed. If you are lacking bone in these areas, a bone graft can be beneficial in filling in the areas and preventing the implants from failing. Most patients who want an overdenture are good candidates for the actual procedure. Your new implants can last for decades, but the denture itself will need to be replaced in about 10 years.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE FOR IMPLANT SECURED DENTURES?

The procedure begins by placing the actual implants. This is done by creating an incision through the soft tissue and then creating a tunnel into the bone. The titanium implant is placed and the process is repeated for the next implant. Most often, four or more implants are needed per arch to keep a full denture in place. You will then have a new denture made for you after taking impressions. The denture is fitted onto the implants and can be removed to clean at your own discretion.
